PUNTARENAS

Puntarenas, known locally as the "Pearl of the Pacific" is the major fishing and cruise ship port on the Pacific side of the country. A bit less "wild on" than its neighbor to the south, Jaco Beach, Puntarenas boasts both the industrial port of Caldera just to the south, it's own cruise ship terminals, and ferry services over to the Guanacaste peninsula, cutting driving time to the northern Pacific beaches, considered the best in the country, in half.

Marinas in the area abound, with both in-town private and public docking space. Thirty minutes to the south, the Marriott Los Suenos Marina and 2 hrs. to the north the Flamingo Resort Marina offer world-class marina facilities. Located between the ocean and the lagoon in Puntarenas, is the Costa Rican Yacht Club, one of oldest and most prestigious in Central America.

From the higher elevations and ocean-view lots of the CDM community, one looks down and across the port city of Puntarenas and the Caldera Port area, taking in sweeping views of the Nicoya Gulf, dotted with islands, and at nite the twinkling lites of the mountainous coastline on both sides.

With dozens of public and more private beaches lining the coastline, CDM is just 10 minutes from Playa Dona Ana, a beautiful protected cove, with hard-paved road access, security, public bathrooms, and restaurants to enjoy. For those times when a family picnic on a more isolated beach is in order, there's Playa Blanca, a beautiful white-sand beach just 15 minutes to the north. Puntarenas has recently renovated over 3 miles of beachfront boulevard and boardwalks adjacent to the cruise ship terminals, which bustling with beach bars, clubs, restaurants and water sport activities like: jet-skiing, para-sailing, boat tours and rentals, sport fishing just to name a few.

Travelers who wish to visit the vast and unspoiled beaches of the northern Pacific coast in Guanacaste, known for some of the best surf spots on the planet, are just a short ferry ride away, thanks to the daily ferry service based on the northern side of town.

For those wishing to explore the islands in the Nicoya Gulf, there are a number of tour operators that offer all-inclusive "island-hopping" adventures, that include everything from water sports activities along the way to open bar and delicious open-pit barbeque parties on deserted island beaches.

The CDM community is surrounded by some of the most beautiful natural access and "green" activities in the country. With the Carrera National Park just 30 minutes to the south, world-famous Manuel Antonio National Park about 1-1/2 hours to the south, the newly opened "Jurassic Park" just 15 minutes to the north, and the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve about 1 hr away, homeowners can enjoy canopy tours, river tours, and hiking or mountain-biking thru the parks. Just 15 minutes up into the higher mountain range behind CDM, is the Vista Del Golfo Hotel, which boasts some of the best canopy, waterfall and horseback riding tours in the area.

Residents and their guests can also enjoy the newly opened Sea Aquarium in Puntarenas, the only one of its kind in Central America.
